BPP admires authors who challenge our perspectives, or who offer less-common inroads to the most compelling subjects of our time, but we only accept submissions that fit within our company's mission. So please read that over carefully before you submit.
Please note: We are not accepting queries for fiction at this time.
We are currently interested in the following genres: narrative nonfiction, memoir, parenting, philosophy, politics, pop culture, sociology, and anything funny. We do not accept work that has been previously published, either through traditional channels or self-publishing platforms.
Your proposal needs to be substantive, well thought-out, and complete. We may be small, but we are extremely selective and consider numerous factors in taking on new titles. For nonfiction, we require a full proposal and a minimum of three completed chapters. (If you don't know what a full proposal looks like, we'd kindly ask that you look into it before submitting.) We cannot respond to generic queries; please make a compelling case for why Brown Paper Press is a good fit for you. (It might be helpful to read one of our titles.)
We are delighted to be receiving so many new submissions, but it means we are a bit behind and you should be prepared to wait a few weeks before you hear back. Lastly, please don't take it personally if your work is not selected. We receive many submissions, and the odds are not in your favor. But that doesn't mean the right fit for you is not out there. We encourage you to persevere in your search and keep us in mind for your next project.
All submissions should be sent via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. In an attempt to be as kind as possible to the environment, we accept only digital submissions.
